Why is my website traffic suddenly dropping?

The short answer

Most of the time, it is not something you broke. The way people search changed underneath all of us. Google now answers a lot of questions right on the results page with an AI summary, so people read the answer and never click through. That dip you are seeing is usually the informational traffic that was never going to buy anyway. The visitors who matter are still findable.

01First, take a breath. It is probably not you.

When traffic drops, the first thought is always "what did I do wrong." You start clicking around your own site at 11pm looking for the broken thing. I get those calls a lot right now, and honestly, for most small businesses the numbers went down because search itself shifted, not because you fumbled it.

So before we fix anything, let me take the guilt off the table. This is happening to nearly everyone at once.

02What actually changed

For years, someone would search a question, see a list of blue links, and click one. Not anymore. A big chunk of searches now end with no click at all, because the person got what they needed on the results page.

The clearest number I trust comes from SparkToro's 2024 study using clickstream data from Datos, a Semrush company. They found that 58.5% of U.S. Google searches ended in zero clicks, and for every 1,000 U.S. searches, only about 360 clicks actually went out to the open web. Their words: the data represents "a diverse and statistically significant sample of users" from September 2022 to May 2024. Honest caveat: this is one panel's clickstream, not Google's own reporting, so treat it as a strong estimate, not gospel.

03The AI summary part

Then Google added AI Overviews, the little AI-written answer that sits at the top. It is very good at answering the question so completely that there is no reason to click.

The Pew Research Center measured this with real browsing data from 900 U.S. adults in March 2025. In Pew's own words, users who saw an AI summary "clicked on a traditional search result link in 8% of all visits," while those who did not "clicked on a search result nearly twice as often (15% of visits)." They also found people were more likely to end their search entirely after reading the summary.

So the answer became the destination. Right?

04Why this is relief, not panic

Here is the part that should let your shoulders drop. The traffic that vanished is mostly the "what time does a plumber usually charge extra" and "how do I know if my roof is bad" kind of search. Informational. Curious. Rarely ready to hire you today.

The searches that still send a click, and still convert, are the ones with intent. "Emergency plumber near me." "Roof repair [your town]." Your local, ready-to-buy people are still out there clicking. Losing a pile of window shoppers can feel like a crisis on a chart and mean almost nothing to your actual bookings.

05Become the answer that gets cited

You do not need world domination. You need to be the source the AI trusts enough to name.

Google's AI Overviews often cite the pages they pull from, and being cited helps. Seer Interactive's September 2025 update looked at 3,119 search terms and found brands cited in the AI Overview earned about 35% higher organic click-through than those left out (0.70% versus 0.52%, so small numbers made a bit larger). Fair caveat, and Seer says it themselves: they "cannot definitively prove that citation causes higher CTRs." Bigger, more trusted sites may just get cited more. Still, the move is the same: write clear, genuinely useful pages that answer real questions your customers ask, so you are the one worth quoting.

06Lean on the ground you actually own

Search is rented land. Your email list is not. Neither is the goodwill of the people who already love you.

Send the newsletter. Ask the happy customer for the review and the referral. Keep your Google Business Profile current. When the algorithm shifts again, and it will, the businesses that stay steady are the ones who never bet everything on one channel.

A couple of quick ones

How do I know if it is AI Overviews and not a real problem?

Check Google Search Console. If your impressions are steady or up but clicks are down, people are seeing you and not clicking. That points to zero-click behavior, not a penalty or a broken site.

Should I stop blogging then?

No. Just write for buyers, not for traffic counts. A page that answers a real hiring question and quietly earns one good client beats a viral post that books nobody.

Is my traffic ever coming back?

The pure informational traffic, probably not to old levels. But the traffic that pays you can grow. That is the number to watch.
