Resources Showing up online

How do I show up in ChatGPT and AI search?

The short answer

You can't buy your way into ChatGPT's answers, and anyone who says you can is selling smoke. You earn your spot by becoming a business the AI tools can clearly understand and see other trustworthy people talking about. In plain terms: put clear answers to real questions on your site, describe who you are the same way everywhere, get mentioned on other reputable sites, and give it a little time.

More and more people have stopped Googling and started just asking. They open ChatGPT, or Perplexity, or Google's own AI answer, and they type "who's the best person to help me with X," and they take whatever it says. So the question every business owner is starting to ask is a fair one: how do I get named in that answer?

Here's the honest version, and it's simpler than the people selling panic want you to think.

There is no ad to buy. You cannot pay ChatGPT to recommend you the way you can pay Google to put your link at the top. So stop looking for the button. There isn't one. What there is instead is something closer to a reputation.

The way I explain it: think of the AI as a friend who read the entire internet and now just tells people who it trusts. It's not reading your ad. It's remembering who showed up, again and again, as a clear and helpful answer, and who other people vouched for. So the whole game is becoming that business. Here's how you actually do it.

01Answer real questions on your site, plainly

The AI tools pull from pages that answer a specific question clearly. So take the questions your customers ask you out loud every week, put each one on its own page, and put the answer right at the top where a busy person, or a busy machine, can grab it in a sentence or two. This one habit does most of the work.

02Say who you are the same way everywhere

Your business name, what you do, where you serve it, all of it should read the same on your website, your Google profile, and anywhere else you show up. When one place calls you one thing and another calls you something else, you're asking the AI to guess, and guessing makes it trust you less. Consistency tells it exactly who you are.

03Get mentioned somewhere other than your own site

This is the one most people skip, and it matters most. When another trustworthy site talks about you, reviews you, or links to you, the AI has a real reason to believe you're worth mentioning. Your own site saying you're great only goes so far. Other people saying it is what tips the scale. So reviews, a guest post, a podcast, a mention in a local roundup, those aren't vanity. They're how you become someone the AI has heard of.

04Make the facts machine-readable

There's a little bit of behind-the-scenes code called schema that spells out your facts in a language the machines read cleanly. It's not magic and it won't carry a weak page, but on a good page it helps the tools understand you without guessing. I wrote a whole plain-English piece on it if you want it.

05Give it time

This is the part nobody wants to hear. Showing up in AI answers is not a switch you flip on Tuesday and see Wednesday. It builds over weeks as the tools re-read the web and start noticing you. That's normal. Steady beats loud here.

That's the whole thing. No secret hack, no ad to buy, no overnight trick. Just becoming the clearest, most-vouched-for answer to the questions your people are already asking. Right? It's the same honest work that's always won, pointed at a new place people are looking.

A couple of quick ones

Can I pay to be in ChatGPT's answers?

No. There's no ad placement inside the AI's recommendations. You earn it by being clear, consistent, and mentioned across the web. If someone offers to buy your way in, keep your wallet closed.

How long does it take?

Usually weeks, not days, and it depends on how much clear, helpful content you have and who's talking about you. It builds, then it compounds.

Do I have to do this for every AI tool separately?

No. The same work, clear answers, a consistent identity, and real mentions, feeds all of them at once. You're not optimizing for one robot. You're just becoming trustworthy, and they all reward that.

Is this different from regular SEO?

It's a cousin. A lot of the same work helps both, but showing up in AI answers leans harder on being clearly the answer and being mentioned elsewhere. I break down the difference in my SEO-versus-AEO piece.
